Auto-Titrating Continuous Positive Airway Pressure Devices (CPAP)

Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) has been used to treat patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAHS) utilizing a fixed single pressure. Auto-titrating CPAP has been available since 2000, and these units automatically titrate positive airway pressure (APAP) to maintain airway patency. These devices are used for titration (APAP titration) and treatment (APAP treatment). These are self-adjusting, record pressure data and compliance (smart technology) and the data is downloadable for interpretation and reporting.

BiPAP Continuous Positive Airway Devices
BiPAP stands for bi-level positive airway pressure. It is a CPAP unit but differs to the extent that the proximal airway pressure is reduced during the exhalation phase of breathing. The unit senses the slight increase in back pressure during exhalation and the pressure reduces to facilitate exhalation. Typically, BiPAP is used for patients who cannot tolerate conventional CPAP and for those on higher CPAP pressures. BiPAP is also used for patients with CHF (congestive heart failure) and those with chronic lung disease, i.e. asthma, emphysema and COPD.
